October 1st, 2021: Information regarding the Master's Course entrance examination
Department of Materials Engineering will NOT conduct the entrance examination according to Application Schedule B (Winter exam) for the FY2022 Master's Course.
July 4th, 2021: Additional information regarding the application of doctoral program [UPDATE]
Those who are unable to take the exam at the test site because they live outside Japan, or those who have an underlying medical condition that places them at high risk of serious COVID-19 infection, may be allowed to take the exam online. Those who wish to take the exam online must follow the instruction in the application form "Application for the Online Examinations for Doctoral Program in the Department of Materials Engineering" shown below. Those who have been approved to take the exam online cannot change to taking the exam at the test site. Applicants' Examination Admission Cards will notify them whether they may take the exam online or not, as well as details regarding the online exam. For those who are allowed to take the exam online, a mandatory online Pre-test will be held on the afternoon of Sunday, August 29th, 2021 (Japan Standard Time). Those who fail to participate will lose their eligibility for admission. From the standpoint of preventing fraud and ensuring the fairness, your entire test session will be recorded and your photo will be taken.
Application for the Online Examinations for Doctoral Program in the Department of Materials Engineering

Graduate Study

Graduate studies at the Department of Materials Engineering cover wide variety of materials, the processing of the materials, and devices, structures and systems using the materials. Through the studies and research, the basis of the materials science and engineering is strengthened and professional background as a materials scientist and engineer is developed.
We welcome the application to graduate study course of our department. Those who want to enter the graduate school in spring need to submit the application in July and take the entrance examination in August and September, in principle.


Important notices

1) The entrance examination may change to be conducted online regarding the influence of COVID-19 pandemic and others. In such case, it will be announced on the Website of School of Engineering (https://www.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp/soee/admission/general_guideline.html) and the Website of the department. Those who want to apply for the graduate study courses need to check the latest information.

The examinee is necessary to prepare the followings under the responsibility of the examinee in advance for the case of online examination.

 • A bright and quiet private room (private room or space where the silence can be guaranteed)

 • Internet connection suitable for the online examinations using video and audio communication

 • A personal computer equipped with camera and microphone

 • A smartphone with camera (connected via 4th or 5th Generation system)

2) For the examinee who is permitted to take the Regular education subjects online in accordance with the guidelines for applicants to the 2022 Master's / Doctoral program of the School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo, other examination subjects (Fundamentals of materials, and oral examination) are also conducted online. Detail will be announced at the delivery of the examination admission card.

3) There is a possibility that the entrance examination for the Master's course in Department of Materials Engineering will be held in the Application Schedule B. The final decision whether the application is open or not will be announced around October 1st, 2021.

4) If any false description or fabrication is found in the application documents, or if there is any misconduct in the examination, the acceptance or the enrollment of the person may be canceled, even after the decision of the acceptance, or even after the enrollment.

Guidance for FY2022 Entrance Examination

The guidance for the entrance examination will be open to anyone, which is held online via Zoom meeting system. Those who want to join the guidance are required to prepare the necessary device and the software, and answer the questionnaire through the following Website to obtain the meeting URL in advance. The guidance is in Japanese, and Q&As are in Japanese or English. The guidance will be recorded and its video will be available to whom wants to view. The detail will be announced on this Website after the guidance.

1) Language (English): All applicants must report the official score of TOEFL iBT or TOEFL iBT Home Edition. Reported "Test Date Scores" is used for evaluation. The official score of the test date in or after September of 2019 is valid. The official score must be reported to the School of Engineering by August 13th (Fri), 2021. 2) Regular education subjects are examined from Regular education subjects of School of Engineering. Select one subject for examination when applying. Three problems for Mathematics, two problems for Physics, or three problems for Chemistry, are given. Examinee must answer all problems of the subject the examinee selected in advance. 3) The examined contents of Fundamentals of materials are as follows;

  • Thermodynamics, Kinetics (Processing)
  • Metallography (Chemistry, Structure)
  • Properties of materials (Solid-state physics, Quantum mechanics)
  • Mechanics of materials (Elasticity, Strength of materials)
Four problems in total (one problem from each content) are given. Examinee must answer all four problems. The total score of the highest and the second-highest scores among four answers is used as the examinee's score. Note: Problems for Doctoral course applicants and for Master's course applicants are the same.

"Connection Test" on Aug. 29th (Sun) is only for online examinees, and online examinees must attend it.
Preliminary dates (Aug. 28th (Sat), Sep. 2nd (Thu), and 5th (Sun)) may be used for examination.
Detail of all examinations will be announced at the delivery of the examination admission card.

Notes for Master's Course Application

All applicants are required to submit the questionnaire sheet.
  • The "Questionnaire sheet [Master's course]" form is included to the entrance examination guidebook of the department. Applicants must fill in the printed form. The prepared form must be submitted with the application form physically by postal mail.
  • The applicant must carefully read the instruction how to fill in the "Questionnaire sheet [Master's course]" form. Information of faculty members with their affiliations, specialties, and maximal number of students assigned (subject to chage) is summarized in the table attached to the entrance examination guidebook of the department. Supervisor(s) of the person passed the examination is determined based on the person's preference and examination score.

Notes for Doctoral Course Application

All applicants are required to contact the faculty member the applicant prefers as the supervisor before the application, and need to explain its reason at the oral examination.


Other Notes

  • The applicant must carefully read the document "Notice for Examination - The 2022 Master's / Doctoral Program Graduate School of Engineering the University of Tokyo" enclosed in the entrance examination guidebook of the department.
  • The applicant can use a ruler during the writing exam of Fundamentals of materials, in addition to items allowed to use, described in the above document.
  • Determined supervisors of the successful applicants will be announced by 18:00 of September 14th (Tue), 2021, on the Website of the department.




For non-Japanese students, there is also a special graduate program offering advanced professional training leading to the degrees of Master of Engineering and Doctor of Engineering (mainly Doctor of Engineering). The program is called IME graduate program, and accepted students may have the unique opportunity of taking a degree from the University of Tokyo with lectures and research conducted completely in English. Also the students who have exceptional academic records are awarded Monbu-Kagakusho scholarship for the whole period of graduate program.
